Bon Chef Makes Air Clean With Formaldehyde-Free Products


Lafayette, NJ – February 2, 2009 - Foodservice supply manufacturer Bon Chef is making the air safer to breathe with a new material. The company announced its choice to construct all millwork products with formaldehyde-free PureBond panels.

 

“The switch to PureBond was a no-brainer,” said millwork products manager Paul McGreevy.  “When you process plywood panels all day, you sometimes worry about what chemicals may be in the sawdust. With PureBond's soy-based adhesives, I know my crew is working safer.”

 

Formaldehyde, a gas emitted from pressed wood products, threatens health when workers are exposed to high levels of the chemical. Excessive formaldehyde exposure can cause skin rashes, throat irritation, and difficulty breathing. Some evidence suggests that formaldehyde increases the likelihood of cancer, and in 1987, the Environmental Protection Agency listed the chemical as a probable human carcinogen.

 

PureBond, a low-emitting plywood made by Columbia Forest Products, replaces formaldehyde with a non-toxic, soy-based adhesive. PureBond’s safety is recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council, who approved the material for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

 

The material’s health benefits extend beyond Bon Chef’s employees. “Using low-emitting PureBond panels greatly improves indoor air quality, which is a benefit that would please all of our millwork customers,” McGreevy said.

 

PureBond panels can now be found in all of Bon Chef’s millwork products. McGreevy says the new panels possess the same quality and natural beauty as traditional panels.
